Tell me why, please

I took this picture of this bed of flowers yesterday mid afternoon. Notice the buds are not open.

This picture was taken last night in the dark around 9 pm.

This one around 1o;15 last night. I used the flash. Why are these buds opening at night rather than in the day time.
